Weather & Climate
|
| |
Several weather and climate elements affect our sailing programs at the Corpus Christi Marina:
- Normal Weather: air temperature, wind, rain, water temperature, etc.
- Hurricanes and other tropical storms
- Water quality: local water purity, "red tide," etc.
Sail Corpus Christi's policies regarding weather appear below in bold type.

Everyday Weather
|

In Corpus Christi, our normal weather is great for sailing nearly year-round. The only "normal" weather concern we have is lightning, which is less common here than in many parts of the United States. Still, our normal practice is as follows:
When thunderstorms threaten (as determined by our certified sailing instructors), we will require all students to come off the water and move inside a nearby building.
Light rain without lightning is not dangerous. So, we will often sail in the rain. If in doubt, please come to the docks. "Cold" weather is a matter of perspective; we can sail comfortably in cooler air temperatures. Cooler water can cause concerns about hypothermia; our certified sailing instructors have the knowledge and skills to identify possible safety concerns. Again, if in doubt, please come to the docks or call 884-2600.

Water Quality--Red Tide
The Corpus Christi Municipal Marina is a state-of-the-art "Clean Marina." City leaders and marina workers have spent years making our marina safe and clean. Still, we at Sail Corpus Christi carefully watch the water quality in the marina and on the Bay. There are basically two areas of concern to us: "red tide," and water pollution.
Red Tide
"Red Tide" is a phenomenon that occurs along the entire Texas Gulf coast. The cause of the redish water is an algae (typically karenia brevis) that "blooms" under certain conditions. Generally, water temperature and salinity must be within certain levels for the algae to reproduce.
Signs of "Red Tide" include:
- Reddish-colored water
- Respiratory difficulties (coughing, etc.)
- Dead fish
Outdoor actvities at Sail Corpus Christi will be cancelled when a nearby outbreak of "red tide" threatens.

Water Quality--Pollution
|

Water Pollution
The source of most of the Marina's water pollution: the City's storm sewers that empty into the marina. After heavy rains, rainwater from city streets empties into the marina near the L-Head. This water usually contains a large amount of litter from the streets, as well as other pollutants. The ongoing seawall reconstruction project may have a positive impact; we will see soon. But, in the meantime, we carefully watch pollution levels in the marina. The state's "Beachwatch" program includes the weekly monitoring of e. coli levels near the "L-Head." Small-boat sailing at Sail Corpus Christi will be cancelled if Texas Beachwatch issues a "red" warning for the Marina.
